The Golden Era was a San Francisco weekly literary journal founded in 1852 by Rollin Daggett and J. Macdonough Foard. From 1860 - 1867 it was published by James Brooks and Joseph E. Lawrence. Mark Twain was a reporter for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise when he first began to submit articles to the Golden Era. The journal printed at least thirty-nine pieces from Twain, some originally written for the Era, others reprinted from the Territorial Enterprise as well as other newspapers. Scholars have identified several other unsigned articles from the Golden Era attributed to Twain but whose authorship remains unproven. The texts of some items originally printed in the Golden Era were later revised by Twain for inclusion in later collected editions of his works.
